Exploring Namibia, Northern Botswana, and Victoria Falls

October 11th - 25th, 2024.

Fifteen days of experiencing classic southern African scenery, wildlife, and culture, finishing at the famous Victoria Falls. We will be visiting Namib-Naukluft National Park, Sossusvlei, the Namibian coast, the Twyfelfontain cultural site and Damaraland Living Museum, Etosha National park, Onguma Private Reserve, Popa Falls, Bwabwata National Park, Chobe National Park (Bostwana), and Victoria Falls.

Day 1

Friday, Oct 11th

Arrive in the capital city of Windhoek. A transport will meet you at the airport and drive you to Droombos Winery and Lodge, where you can check into your room and rest before dinner.

Day 2

Saturday, Oct 12th

After breakfast we will load the safari vehicles and drive approximately 5 hours to Neura’s Lodge and Winery near Sesriem. We will check into our rooms, rest a bit, then go on a short jeep ride to observe the cheetah feeding at Naankuse Wildlife Sanctuary.

Day 3

Sunday, Oct 13th

Depart at 5:30 am for Namib-Naukluft National Park for a wildlife and scenic drive through the dunes in morning light, then take a short 4×4 drive and hike to the famous Sossusvlei dry ancient lakebed. Expect to see oryx and springbok on the drive. We will spend about 2 hours at Sossusvlei before returning to Neura’s lodge for a wine tasting and cheese platter lunch.  Sundowner tour near the lodge followed by dinner.

Day 4

Monday, Oct 14th

Depart at 5:30 am again for Namib-Naukluft National Park for a morning drive, stopping to photograph the dunes of the Namib Desert (the world’s oldest desert) and hike to the top of dune #40 for panoramic views. The hike will last about one hour. From there we will drive to Walvis Bay, approximately 5 hours, where we still stay for two nights at the Oysterbox Hotel. Walk to a local restaurant for dinner.

 Day 5

Tuesday, Oct 15th

After breakfast, we will walk to the harbor for a 9 am boat tour of the surrounding bay, followed by a gourmet lunch on the beach and an afternoon 4×4 jeep tour of Sandwich Harbor and the surrounding dunes. You can expect to see fur seals, pelicans, flamingos, dolphins and possibly humpback whales. Drinks and snacks will be served on the boat and jeep tours. Return to our rooms and walk to a nearby restaurant for dinner around 7 pm. 

Day 6

Wednesday, Oct 16th

After breakfast, we will depart at 7:30 am for Swakopmund to take a guided “Little Five Wildlife Tour” via 4×4 jeeps in the surrounding Namib Desert. Our guide, Chantelle, is a very knowledgeable and passionate naturalist who will show us the often overlooked and misunderstood creatures and why it is important to be aware of the smaller life right below our feet. Expect to see skinks, lizards, geckos, tube spiders and possibly snakes. The tour lasts 3 hours, afterward we will have lunch in Henties Bay and drive approximately 4 hours to Twyfelfontein Country Lodge, where we will have dinner and spend the night.

Day 7

Thursday, Oct 17th

After breakfast, we will take a one-hour guided walking tour of the Twyfelfontein cultural site & petroglyphs and visit a living museum of the Damara people. After the morning tours, we will drive to the Okaukuejo Rest Camp in Etosha National Park (approximately 5 hours). We will go for a short self-guided drive in the park and later walk to the waterhole wildlife viewing area next to the lodge grounds for sunset. We will have dinner and spend the night at the lodge. Expect to see elephants, giraffes, plains zebras, several species of antelope, the endangered black rhino (of which Etosha is home to more than 50% of the remaining population), abundant birdlife and possibly lions, cheetahs, spotted hyenas, and leopards.

Day 8

Friday, Oct 18th

Depart Okaukuejo at 6:45 am for a self-guided drive into Etosha National Park to view wildlife. Stop at Namutoni Rest Camp for a snack and cold beverage and then continue through the park to Onguma private game reserve, where we will spend two nights at the beautiful Bush Camp Lodge. We will take the afternoon off to allow you to relax and refresh before dinner. Expect to see elephants, giraffes, plains zebras, several species of antelope, abundant birdlife and possibly lions, black rhinos, cheetahs, spotted hyenas, and leopards.

 Day 9

Saturday, Oct 19th

After breakfast, half of the group will will go for an early morning drive into Etosha National Park, while the other half will depart later in the morning to visit a ground level waterhole hide within the reserve to view wildlife. We will return to Onguma for lunch then rest a bit before going on a Sundowner Game Drive at 4:00pm.  Dinner will be served following our return.  Expect to see elephants, giraffes, plains zebras, several species of antelope, abundant birdlife and possibly black rhinos, lions, cheetahs, spotted hyenas, and leopards. Massage services are also available at the lodge. Dinner at Bush Camp.

Day 10

Sunday, Oct 20th

The groups will switch morning activities so everyone has an opportunity to visit the ground level hide in Onguma as well as go for a morning game drive in the eastern side of Etosha National Park. Expect to see elephants, giraffes, plains zebras, several species of antelope, abundant birdlife and possibly black rhinos, lions, cheetahs, spotted hyenas, and leopards.

After the morning activities, we will depart Onguma Game Reserve for the city of Rundu in northern Namibia, where we will have dinner and spend the night at the Gondwana Hakusembe River Lodge.

Day 11

Monday, Oct 21st

After breakfast, we will depart Rundu for Popa Falls, roughly 2.5 hours away. We will go on a game drive along the Okavango River in the Zambezi region of northern Namibia. This region has a large populations of elephants, hippos, crocodiles, cape buffalo, birdlife, and rare species of antelope. We will return to Popa Falls in the afternoon to check into our rooms and have dinner at the Popa Falls Resort.

 

Day 12

Tuesday, Oct 22nd

Early morning departure for the Eastern Zambezi region to visit Bwabwata National Park, where we will go on a game drive in hopes of seeing the rare and elusive African wild dog. After the game drive in Bwabwata, we will continue on to Kasane, Botswana for dinner and lodging at Sunbirds Chobe Hotel.

 

Day 13

Wednesday, Oct 23rd

Morning departure for Livingstone, Zambia, roughly one hour away, where we will spend much of the day visiting Victoria Falls National Park. Return to Kasane for dinner and lodging at Sunbirds Chobe Hotel.

Day 14

Thursday, Oct 24th

Early morning departure for a game drive in Chobe National Park. Expect to see elephants, abundant birdlife, cape buffalo, hippos, and crocodiles.

We will return to Kasane for lunch and an afternoon rest before going on a boat tour of the Chobe River. Dinner and lodging in Kasane at Sunbirds Chobe Hotel.

Day 15

Friday, Oct 25th

After breakfast, we will drive to the Kasane airport and fly to Johannesburg, South Africa to connect with your homebound flights.
