Exploring New Zealand's South Island, Nov 3rd - 17th, 2024

15 days/14 nights. Includes a night in Auckland on each end, plus Christchurch, Akaroa, Dunedin, Doubtful Sound, Milford sound, Queenstown, Fox and Franz Joseph Glaciers, Nelson and Kaikoura.  Cost: $6,295 per person. Based on double occupancy, single supplement available upon request.

Explore New Zealand’s South Island with us from November 3-17, 2024. Our journey will begin in Auckland, and from there we will fly to Christchurch. We will spend 13 days exploring the majestic mountains, glaciers, waterfalls, and fjords of the south island while viewing dolphins, seals, penguins, and endemic birds. We will then fly back to Auckland for the final night of the tour, at which point you can extend your travel or return home.

 

Days 1 & 2

Sunday, 11/3 & Monday, 11/4                                               

Arrive in Auckland on Sunday. Fly to Christchurch on Monday morning and drive to Akaroa

The tour begins with your arrival at Auckland International airport on Sunday, Nov 3rd. We will transport you to your hotel for the evening. The following morning we have a 9 am flight to Christchurch, where we will get our vans and drive 1.5 hours to Akaroa on the Banks Penninsula. Shortly after arriving in Akaroa, we will board a catamaran and go in search of the world’s smallest and rarest Dolphin – the Hector’s dolphin.  After the cruise we will check into our hotel. Dinner and lodging in Akaroa.

 

Day 3

Tuesday, 11/5

Akaroa to Dunedin

9 am departure

From Akaroa, we will drive back towards Christchurch and then south along the coast to Dunedin. We’ll stop to take in the scenery and birdlife. The drive will take approximately 6 – 7 hours. Dinner and lodging in Dunedin.

Day 4

Wednesday, 11/6

Dunedin to Te Anau

9 am departure

We will begin the day with a short drive to the Royal Albatross Centre and Penguin Reserve on the Otago Peninsula. We will spend a couple hours observing penguins and albatrossbefore driving approximately 3.5 hours southward to Te Anau. Dinner and lodging in Te Anau.

 

Day 5

Thursday, 11/7

Te Anau & Doubtful Sound

9 am departure

From Te Anau we will drive 30 minutes to the small village of Manpouri to join an all-day tour of Doubtful Sound. We will return to Te Anau in the evening for dinner and lodging.

 

Day 6

Friday, 11/8

Te Anau to Milford Sound to Queenstown

9 am departure

We will start this day by driving 2 hours north to Milford Sound.  We will take a 3-hour cruise in the sound to observe whales, seals, dolphins, penguins, and several waterfalls. After the tour we will drive approximately 4 hours to Queenstown.  Dinner and lodging in Queenstown.

Day 7

Saturday, 11/8

Queenstown

Depart at your leisure

Today you will be able to explore Queenstown at your leisure and choose to partake in local excursions, including fly fishing or a boat tour of Lake Wakapitu. Dinner and lodging in Queenstown. 

Day, 8

Sunday, 11/10

Queenstown to Fox Glacier

9 am departure

Today we will drive approximately 5 – 6 hours to Fox Glacier, stopping along the way to enjoy the scenery and possible bungee jumping at the Kawarau Gorge Bridge – the world’s first commercial bungee jump. Dinner and lodging in Fox Glacier.

Day 9

Monday, 11/11

Fox Glacier to Greymouth

7 am departure

Today we will have an early start and drive a short distance to Lake Matheson, where we have the possibility of seeing Mount Cook and its reflection in the lake. From there we will drive north along the coast to the Franz Joeseph Glacier and hike to the terminus of the glacier. Continuing northward after the hike, we will drive 2.5 hours to Greymouth. Dinner and lodging in Greymouth.

 

 

Day 10

Tuesday, 11/12

Greymouth to Nelson

9 am departure

From Greymouth, we will drive approximately 5 – 6 hours north along the coast to Nelson. We will stop to take in the wonderful views along this stretch, including Pancake Rock Lookout. Dinner and lodging in Nelson.

 

 

Day 11

Wednesday, 11/13

Nelson to Kaikoura

9 am departure

We will spend the first part of the day exploring the town of Nelson and surrounding area. Possible excursions include hiking or kayaking in Abel Tasman National park. In the afternoon, we will drive 3.5 hours to the beautiful coastal town of Kaikoura. Dinner and lodging in Kaikoura.

Day 12

Thursday, 11/14

Kaikoura

9 am departure

Kaikoura is famous for its dolphin, seal and whale watching. We will start the day by taking a boat tour to swim with the dusky dolphins. You can come along just for the ride if you prefer not to get in the water. After lunch, we will hike along the Kaikoura Peninsula in search of New Zealand fur seals, dolphins, and possibly whales. Dinner and lodging in Kaikoura.

 

 

 

Day 13

Friday, 11/15

Kaikoura to Christchurch

12 pm departure

We will spend the morning exploring Kaikoura before driving roughly 3 hours back to Christchurch where we will check into our hotel and go for a walking tour of the city. Dinner and lodging Christchurch.

 

 

Day 14

Saturday, 11/16

Christchurch to Auckland

12 pm departure

This morning is yours to relax or explore a bit more of Christchurch. We will take an afternoon flight back to Auckland for the final night of the tour. Dinner and lodging in Auckland.

Day 15

Sunday, 11/17

Depart for home or other travels.

We will provide transportation to the airport for your flight home or onward to another destination. Auckland and the north island have much to offer, so you may decide to stay a few days longer. We are happy to assist you in planning if you choose to extend your trip.
